Gaining Writing Experience

GAINING WRITING EXPERIENCE

Some Catch-22, huh? In the writing business, you can't get published until you have some experience. If you can't get published until you have experience, how do you get experience? How do you get publishing clips to show all those publishers who want to see "previously published clips"? It's almost as if Lily Tomlin's telephone operator character came up with this: "Is this the party to whom I'm speaking? Are you the unpublished writer who has published clips I can look at? (Snort, snort!)"

What's an unpublished writer to do? Get published, of course! I'm not being flippant; I'm serious. Think about your life. There are a number of things you can write about right now (essays and travel articles about that great place you stumbled upon last summer). There is a lot more you can write about if you do a little research (an article regarding something that has been on your mind—your mother's illness? The stringent standards of learning being enforced upon elementary school students?). How about doing an article about the writer's conference you attended?

Now you have your ideas, but where do you get them published? You might start with your local newspaper. If they're like most newspapers, they're in need of fillers from time to time. They might even be in need of freelance reporters during the summer and the holiday seasons. Talk with your newspaper's editor. Be frank. Tell him/her that you need some publishing experience in order build your portfolio. In addition to putting some published clips in your "clip file," you'll also gain valuable experience and hone your craft. Then when you write that novel starring the investigative reporter, you'll know the lingo…and the editor can say, "I knew that author when…."

Op-ed pieces are another way to go; and if you query the right market, you could make some good money while acquiring these published clips. We all have opinions. If you can write about a hot subject and express your opinion on it succinctly and objectively, you're in the position to write an op-ed piece. Let's go back to the standards of learning issue. While you realize little Johnny needs to get a good education, you also realize the importance of playtime and "down time." You don't want Johnny to be a prime candidate for a stress-induced heart attack at age 32. Many other parents feel this way. Some don't. Some would say, "Standards of learning?" Talk with other parents to get conflicting views and write the article.

Though some shudder at the very words "non-paying market," if you're an unpublished writer seeking clips, it's a good alternative. After you get those clips, it's not so great to work for free; but at this point, you need the exposure and experience, and they need the articles. I think it's a fair trade as long as you work for a web site, e-zine, print magazine, newsletter, or even charitable organization that you would be proud to have worked for. It won't do you any good to have clips with grammatical errors (either yours or theirs) or content that isn't credible.

Entering contests is another way to get clips, though this is more of a writing sample. Still, if you win or even place in the contest, this will lend some weight to your writing. This is especially true if you're a genre writer. Romance Writers of America even has a contest called the Golden Heart Contest wherein the winner has the "best unpublished manuscript." Malice Domestic is a contest for mystery writers. While these "biggie" contests are great, small contests are a boon to the unpublished writer as well. One caveat: There are a lot of bogus contests out there. Before you pay any sort of fee, check out the contest.

Moderation - An Emerging Alcohol Treatment Option

The idea that moderating alcohol abuse is possible has never been popular in the United States. It doesn't fit well with the typical disease model. There are, however, good reasons to consider moderation among the available treatment options.

First, moderation isn't a fantasy. Just as everyone knows someone who needs to stop drinking, we also know someone else who has quit or moderated their use. Many binge drinking college students and military personnel undergo spontaneous remissions with graduation and discharge. Others people of all ages and conditions simply adjust their consumption to altered circumstances.

Next, the emerging use of Naltrexone, an FDA approved and SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) recommended anti-craving medication, as an adjunct to treatment has extended the possibilities for treatment planning. Unlike Antibuse - an aversive drug that makes clients physically ill if they consume even trace amounts of alcohol - Naltrexone reduces the craving for alcohol and stops the pleasurable brain responses from alcohol. Importantly, it is compatible with continued alcohol consumption and has been used successfully in moderation programs. With the urges reduced and the effects blocked, drinkers tend to drink less, if at all, and may begin considering alternative activities.

Finally, moderation options allow people to explore possibilities, examine their own use, and determine their own outcomes. Those who find alcohol intruding in unwanted ways may be able to curtail their use and avoid dependence or addiction. Dependent drinkers may be diverted from addiction. Full-blown alcoholics may realize the extent of their addiction and proceed to get the help they wouldn't otherwise have accepted.

Those who find themselves losing control of their alcohol use - and usually this loss extends to other aspects of their lives as well - do better when they feel more like they have some control over their treatment. Exploring realistic options, using anti-craving medications, tracking responses, trying alternatives, engaging in short term cognitive behavioral therapy, and other strategies all help to keep people in treatment, away from heavy drinking, and more apt to successfully make long term changes, regardless of what the nature of those changes turns out to be.

This only works, of course, if the moderation option is real. Using it as a "bait and switch" tactic does a disservice to clients and programs regardless of intention. Given an open and supportive environment, clients will reach their own conclusions with regard to their needs and make decisions accordingly. It's a time consuming and sometimes frustrating process, but clients who feel tricked into treatment won't benefit from it and won't ever return.

People looking for help, for themselves or others, will find that good programs will work with them and offer a range of outcomes, methods, and alternatives. Success is a matter of motivation, expertise, and adjustment. Looking to where the most options exist, and where staff will discuss preferences and alternatives, gives an indication of quality and responsiveness. Peoples' lives and problems deserve the best solutions, ones that will last, not ones that are predetermined.

Ensure to Insure Your Boats - Progressive Boat Insurance

Summer always remind us the lovely warm days ahead, to spend in the waterways, especially on a boat. Majority of the boat owners tend to consider it as an adorned possession. The lovely days on the boat with friends and family, sailing off at the time of sunset are always memorable. All these incredible experience would turn bad, when your boat is not insured properly. Progressive boat insurance includes all the watercrafts like sail boat, boat, yacht, and other such marine vehicle.

To add extra pleasure during your rides on the waves, the boat insurance is essential and you have to check in for the following coverage in your policy:

Coverage on physical damage The physical damages to the marine vehicle may occur due to vandalism, lightning, theft, fire, hurricanes or tornadoes, which are very natural. The engines, boat trailer and outboard motors are included in the coverage. The personal equipments present in the boat like, clothing, jewelries, food, mobile phones, etc. are not incorporated. If you are specific about including them, you can look for additional coverage.

Liability coverage If you happen to cause accident with another boat, and liable to pay for the damages caused in the other boat (property or personal injury), liability coverage is worth paying to compensate the value of your expenses, in such cases.

Uninsured coverage Uninsured boat insurance coverage is identical to the uninsured auto insurance coverage. When you happen to collide or meet with accident with some other boat and that happens to posses an expired insurance or without insurance, the repair on your boat will be covered through this coverage.

Medical coverage

The medical coverage does not include a huge amount. Generally, it ranges from four hundred to ten thousand dollars.

Moreover, the insurance authorities declare other features like 24/7 claim service, Emergency Towing and Labor as well as Total Loss Replacement which are specially designed to assist the boat owners.

Before proceeding to an agent, make a thorough search online for the progressive boat insurance quotes and then decide your company and agent. You can directly get the offers of the companies. The assistance on insurance is available with the National Boat Owners Association. If you are a member in the association, you can easily get the informative data on Boat insurance. You need to evaluate the various coverage mentioned above with the companies as well as the cost of the premium you pay should be lesser. Read all the contents of your insurance papers, before you sign into contract.

5 Iguana Facts Many People Don't Know

Iguanas are a well known and are generally well-liked among the human population. However, unless you are a lizard lover or basically a iguana lover, there are some things you may not know about this interesting creatures. Listed below are five facts about iguanas that you may not know.

1. Iguanas are herbivores. This means they do not eat meat but rather plants. Some sources cite that iguanas are omnivores. Yet, iguanas should not eat animal product because their metabolism is better adapted to absorbing the proteins of a plant. Animal proteins are too multifaceted for iguanas, it won't be used right. Basically, the proteins that animals have cannot be absorbed into the iguanas' bodies for nutrients.

What, then, happens to the proteins not absorbed? It turns into uric acid that is very dangerous for an iguana. When a build up for the uric acid happens in the iguana, it turns into a gout. Animal proteins can be very hard for iguana's digestive system to get rid of, putting pressure on the reptiles' kidneys. In turn, causing the reptile to have kidney complications. Feeding an iguana animal products will indeed shorten the lifespan of the iguana.

2. Iguanas Are Trainable. For those who think iguanas would be nice to have but are pretty stupid, you might be surprised to learn that iguanas are just as smart as a dog or even a cat. An iguana can be taught to things like human beings. Some people have taught their pet to use the bathroom while others have trained their iguanas to do many tricks. If lost, some iguanas can find their way home.

This is just to show you that even reptiles can learn things, provided their trainers take the time to teach them. People often are too quick to judge other animals because they are lower than other animals.

3. Iguanas do grow. Just because you bought your iguana's cage to fit him does not mean, he will always fit in that cage. Some iguanas have grown to six feet long. This is especially true if the iguana has a loving habitat and environment that will more than adequately let the iguana grow. When debating the size of the iguana's cage, a person should always keep in mind how long the iguana can grow for and plan accordingly to avoid future issues.

4. Iguanas are arboreal. What does this mean for its owner. Remember that iguanas in the wild spend a good chunk of time in trees. To stimulate growth of the iguana, an owner should stimulate its habitat as well. Place some type of climbing material in the iguana's home although you do not need to place "real" trees to create the official effect. Just something as simple as a post can let your iguana feel like they are back in the wild, perched on the tree.

5. Iguanas crave sunlight - Like most things that grow, iguanas need sunlight too. Not only to have the light but to also absorb it. An iguana will utilize UVA and UVB light so they can absorb nutrients correctly. The UVB light will trigger a chemical reaction in the reptile's skin which will help make vitamin D3. What does D3 do? It processes the calcium within the bloodstream.

As you can see, care for an iguana is no easy feat. Yet, by learning more about them, you can assure your iguana will live a full and happy life.

Some Tips To Help You Study For The Big Exam, And Get That 'A+' You Deserve

Let me tell you a little bit about myself - I am what's known in the industry as a Science Geek - love Science. So... it will come as no surprise, that I didn't start off working with computers, and I certainly didn't start off "shopping". I have a degree in Science, majoring in Microbiology & Biochemistry.

The one thing that everyone that has ever studied Science knows - is that it's hard work. And not just hard work, it's BORING hard work. Let me tell you - it's no fun trying to cram the complete Krebs Cycle in your head at 2AM. I always used to laugh, when I first started working. People would always say - is it hard working in the real world, after you have spent the last 4 years being a student. I am here to tell you, being a student is twice (if not three times) as hard as working. Working is like a walk in the park, compared to all those nights studying (or worrying about what your result is after you have taken the exam).

Why am I studying the Krebs Cycle at this time of morning you ask? Well - I was (& still am) - one of those people that likes to get everything done at the last minute. Not because I'm lazy (well.... 75% of me isn't lazy anyway), but because for me, this gave fantastic results. I can write awesome reports when are due tomorrow, and I could produce great exam results, when I cram everything into my head at the last minute (as much as I don't condone doing this, it worked for me).

I recently came across a product that I wish I had been able to use when I was studying - sure I work better when I study at the last minute - but you also find that when you are studying for 4 days straight (and when you have 8 exams in 1 week that's what you end up doing), your mind goes into a kind of blurrrr - and you eventually can't concentrate, and stuff anymore in there (which is why I don't condone studying at the last minute - unless you find this is what really suits you). The last couple of exams always gave me mediocre results, because my brain just couldn't take any more in - and sure I could have started studying earlier - but my mind just doesn't work that way - I tend to forget things more than a couple of weeks old (much to my colleagues frustration).

The product is a CD full of music. (Huh!?!? - I hear you say). Not just any music, music that has been proven to help you study. Now, this is no new concept - you'll find that babies learn better when listening to Mozart, and that they use music to make chemotherapy more endurable. So.. it makes sense (and indeed has been proven) that music also helps the brain to focus more (and fall asleep less often) when we are studying. Just do a search on Google - "music to help you study", or "music for learning" - or something like that - you are bound to come across one of the music CD's in your neck of the wood. When I was studying I used to have the TV on - because this would help - to have people talking, when I was up at night. But - a CD especially designed for the purpose would have been even better.

Another way to keep your concentration levels up during the stressful time, is to eat properly, and look after yourself (which includes getting as much sleep as you can). The best foods for the brain are complex carbohydrates (i.e. not plain old sugar), with low GI (glycemic index). Examples of such food include: Fruit (apples, grapes, oranges) Cereals (oatmeal) Dairy (Milk, Yoghurt) Grains (rice) Vegetables (salad, kidney beans)

Above all.... remember - it's just an exam. Don't panic about it too much, and you are sure to do better. As long as you have studied, and have been paying attention in class - you are bound to do alright. You don't need to get an A - just try to be the best that you can be (& don't ring up sick on the day - it will only add to your stress, by giving you 3 more days of worry).

After your exam week(s) - don't forget to let your hair down & party - forget about studying for at least a couple of weeks (if not until next year)!

Good Luck...

How Eco-Fabulous Can Be Eco-Nomical

Becoming eco friendly is the newest favorite pastime but while everyone has their own reasons for "going green" the underlying theme is green could be your wallet's ally.

Everything from conserving water and energy to other essential environmentally conscious choices can put more money back in your pocket, and home buyers are considering these options when purchasing a home.

How much money could you be saving?

o Alternative powered homes like solar, wind or geo-thermal are easier to locate and much more affordable today. The initial costs of these systems can be high but when seeking a new home to buy consider streamlining your choices to include homes with alternative generated energy. A top energy saving item is the Owl Energy Monitor; this device shows you how much energy you use in your home and how much its costing you. Take for instance the solar energy systems. Many are portable systems that are utilized in high traffic areas of the home such as the family room. You could cut your energy usage in that room up to 40%. There are many other items that are surprisingly simple to install and again while the initial costs are quite high, looking for a home that is already comprised of these items can save you a bundle. Less money towards the utilities and more disposable income for you wallet.

o Indoor air quality can make a big impact on your medical expenses. Studies show that asthmatics and allergy sufferers have fewer to no breathing problems when using eco friendly materials like green flooring and low VOC paint materials. You can rid your home of most dust mites, allergens and sometimes mold just by disposing of the carpet and installing hard wood flooring. While searching for your new home you can look for greener components that will cost you less for maintenance and help keep your family healthy. A healthier home life means less money spent on medicines, doctor visits and absences from work.

o Traditional appliances have been outsourced with newer energy efficient models. Water heaters can account for 15% of your water bill and if more than 10 years old it will only work at 50% of its capacity. Toilets and shower heads, faucets and other energy efficient appliances that conserve water can be advantageous to a new home owner. While utility bills continue to increase everyone should look for ways to safeguard their money.

New home buyers can realize the positive effects of buying green with a little pre-planning. Looking for ways to save money before selecting your new home is a valid safeguard for future expenses. By seeking out those homes that already have green components installed, you'll save a tremendous amount of time and money for years to come. And while many people believe going green is just too expensive and time-intensive the way to get around those concerns are by starting out small. Look for those items that will make the deal and save you lots of money in the long run.

Swimming vs. Golf

Recently, I have taken up golf, and I can't help but notice the similarities between learning golf and learning swimming. Both are finesse sports that require large amounts of concentration and practice to get right, and it is unnecessary (and ill-advised) to gain great amounts of strength to make major improvements in either sport. Let's look at some specific ways golf is like swimming:

1. It Starts with Head Position. In golf, you must keep your head still and look straight at the ball while you swing in order to make contact. In swimming, you must keep your head still and look straight down at the bottom of the pool while you rotate in order to get the most out of your stroke.

2. Concentration is Key. The moment you start thinking about more than one thing when you are about to hit the ball is the moment that something goes wrong. If I get 2 tips on my golf swing and I think about both of them the next time I tee up, I tend to have an underwhelming result! The same goes for doing the swimming drills. As a coach, if I give a swimmer several things to think about, inevitably, nothing will go right. The idea is to concentrate on one aspect, practice it, master it, and move on.

3. The Fewer Strokes, The Better. When improving your score in golf, you want to take fewer strokes to get the ball in the hole. To improve your swim (especially open water), you want to take fewer strokes per length, in order to utilize your energy for the entire swim or triathlon.

4. Follow Through is Important. When you hit the ball, it is important that you follow through all the way with your club. In freestyle swimming, to get the most out of your stroke, you must extend your arm and glide.

5. Power Comes from the Core. Your arms and legs themselves do not need to be incredibly powerful to have success in either sport. With both sports, the power comes from the core- abdominal muscles, lower back, and hips. Legs are used more for stabilization than to propel you forward in swimming. Legs in golf are also used more for stabilization, rather than for more powerful strokes.

Both sports can also be frustrating, but with practice, patience, and persistence, swimming and golf can both present you with a meditative-like form of exercise that I have found to be both fulfilling and fun!

Spotlight on World Events (June 3, 2007) The Dumb and the Wise

Some things people do are just down right dumb, and sometimes I am surprised other folks wake up, like Japan, so let's look at the Spotlight for today:

1) (CNN) "LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A British artist who last week ate a meal of meatballs made from a dead corgi dog in a protest against animal cruelty said on Sunday his next project involved being buried in a box under a mountain of mashed potato." The article goes on to say, "McGowan said he ate the dog because he was angry that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, of which the royal family is a patron, had not prosecuted Prince Philip, the Queen's husband, for hunting and killing a fox." It is obvious, McGowan doesn't care one way or another about dogs, or foxes, or such foolish rights. I am not for the cruelty of animals, but in Vietnam I had dog-soup, and if cooked right it is pretty good; and don't think it is so off the wall, simply because you are an American, or European. The world does not exist because of these countries. Peru has Ginny pig for lunch and dinner, I love it. And I like snake in Japan, and I like camel cook right in Cairo, and they eat horse in Malta. So what is the beef with dog and fox. Wake up McGowan I think you are on a big ego trip to show off.

2) Birth date: February 11, 1953 Status: Has not announced candidacy (CNN) " (Jeb)Bush has said in the past that he has no ambitions of succeeding his older brother as president in 2008, but that has not stopped the speculation. The two-term governor -- who was constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in 2006 -- guided Florida through eight hurricanes that ravaged the state in 2004 and 2005. He headed into the final months of his administration with a 55 percent job approval rating among Floridians. Bush failed in his first gubernatorial race in 1994 but won four years later." I am not sure what all this talk is about, but if Jeb wants to run, good luck, I suggest he look at his brothers track record, it is not so good this time around, perhaps he should have his father back him up if he runs. Many of us believed in our present Bush, President, not so much anymore, and Jeb needs to understand that it is thick in the minds of Americans, two deadbeats in the row is way too much.

3) GOSHOGAWARA, Japan (Reuters) -CNN some people sleep forever and never wake up, it is about time Japan has, and I am pound to say, they have, to a certain degree; they are turning from the chicken syndrome, to the old mighty warrior stance. I say that because of this: "Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said that until the abduction issue has been resolved, Japan will not provide funds for a multilateral deal clinched in February, by which Pyongyang agreed to scrap its nuclear arms program in return for energy aid." Actually, I'd take it a step further, I'd take the funds and build a nuclear arsenal, instead of heating the homes of the folks that told our women, rapped them, and then came proudly prancing down the ally, to notify all of Japan what they did, and laugh all the way to the bank with everyone's money, the US, Japan, China, and South Korea in particular. 4) Putin, the President of Russia and Gorbachev, jour old friend is Russia, have said in so many words, the US is empire building, and Britain should have warned America against that. I a way I suppose both Putin and Gorbachev are right, but Putin is no Arch Angle either, and Gorbachev, even though he did a lot of good for the world, never really had intentions of creating a democracy, just a capitalist commune, that was headed by a empire, then of course, the walls came tumbling down. And I do not believe a new cold war is going to start, we are already in WWIII, it will just worsen until them or we, push the lever, it has been in the making for 55-years, let's get on with the show, get it over with, if we are going to do it, let's not pretend. There cannot be two generals standing on the same spot of land without one wanting the other to get off it. Say what you want, it has always been that way, we presently live in a pretense world, and the only think that has changed is the numbers from II to III. So it remains: who is ahead of whom!

5) BBC News "Two Palestinian men have been killed by Israeli troops in separate incidents in Nablus and Jenin in the West Bank." And after 60-years the war continues, or should I say after 2500-years the war continues with the Jews and the Arabs, or the Jews and Palestinians, or the Jews and the world. There are many questions and obstacles here to peace, such as Jerusalem, water, the holy sites, history, empty peace talks, camps, activism, the Fatah and Hamas (both the same to me); my suggestion is to forget about peace, and go to war, and fight it out to the end--and I mean end, finish it off, instead of going on from year to year and prolonging all the suffering. Nobody really cares who is right or wrong. The world body hates Jews, and the Arabs Hate Jews, and so let the Jews stand on their own, and fight it out with Hamas, drive them into the sea, or are driven into sea. What will most likely happen is the Jews in the latter days will end up in Egypt; they do have a history with them. But between then and now is the question, which can live under such agony. Forget what the world body says, and eliminate the foe. That is what war is all about, and what Hama and the Fatah would like to do to the Jews, so let' stop pretending the Jews are the bad guys, and should play fair.
